What Is a GTM Engineer? The Role, Skills, Salary and How to Get Hired (2026)

A GTM engineer builds the systems that create pipeline. Learn what the role involves, the skills you need, what it pays, and where to find GTM engineer jobs.

A GTM engineer builds the automated systems that find leads, enrich data and run outreach for a revenue team. It's one of the fastest-growing jobs in go-to-market, and most companies still don't have one.

If you've seen "GTM engineer" pop up on LinkedIn and wondered what it actually means, this guide covers it. You'll learn what the job involves, which skills matter, what it pays, and how to land one.

What is a GTM engineer?

A GTM (go-to-market) engineer designs and runs the workflows that turn a sales and marketing strategy into booked meetings. Instead of hiring five more reps to send more emails, a company hires one person who builds the machine that does it.

In practice, a GTM engineer

  • Builds lists of target accounts and enriches them with firmographic and intent data
  • Sets up signal tracking, such as job changes, funding rounds and website visits
  • Writes and automates personalised outbound across email and LinkedIn
  • Routes inbound leads to the right rep, fast
  • Connects the CRM, enrichment tools and AI agents so they work as one system

The common tools are Clay, n8n, HubSpot or Salesforce, and LLM agents. TechTree describes the role as possibly the first revenue job title created largely by AI.

Why GTM engineer jobs are exploding

Demand has grown fast, and supply hasn't caught up.

  • According to ZoomInfo data, hiring for GTM engineers has doubled year over year for two straight years, with hiring peaks in January and July.
  • RevGuild counted 244 US GTM engineer postings in April 2026 alone, more than the previous seven months combined.
  • In Europe, new GTM engineer role starts went from about 33 in 2023 to about 446 in 2025, per TechTree.

The reason is simple. AI made it possible for one technical operator to do work that used to need a team, and companies want that leverage.

GTM engineer vs RevOps vs SDR

These three roles sit close together, so people mix them up.

RoleMain jobOutput
GTM engineerBuilds automated pipeline systemsWorkflows, enrichment, outbound at scale
RevOpsDesigns revenue processes, data and reportingClean CRM, forecasts, process
SDRProspects and books meetings by handConversations and meetings

A quick way to remember it: RevOps decides how the revenue engine should run, and the GTM engineer builds the parts that run it. For the full breakdown, read our guide to what RevOps is and how to get into it.

Skills you need to become a GTM engineer

Despite the title, this isn't a pure software engineering job. RevGuild found that only about 9% of GTM engineers came from software engineering. Most came from sales and growth roles.

The skills that matter most

  1. Workflow tools. Clay is close to a must-have. n8n, Make or Zapier help too.
  2. Data enrichment. Knowing which data providers to use, and how to combine them, for accurate contact data.
  3. Light coding. Enough JavaScript or Python to call an API, clean data or write a formula.
  4. Prompt writing. Getting LLMs to write personalised first lines and classify leads reliably.
  5. CRM know-how. HubSpot or Salesforce, and how data should flow into them.
  6. Sales sense. Understanding what a good-fit account looks like and what makes a prospect reply.

That last one is why so many GTM engineers start as SDRs. If you're in that seat now, our guide to SDR jobs in 2026 explains how the SDR-to-GTM-engineer path works.

GTM engineer salary

Pay is strong because few people have the full skill set. RevGuild's analysis of US vacancies with disclosed pay put the median base salary at about $150,000.

There's a lot of variation, though. Betts Recruiting notes that salary data is still thin because the role is so new. Companies also post the same job under titles like Growth Engineer or RevOps Engineer, so search for those too.

How to land a GTM engineer job

  1. Build in public. Make a Clay table or n8n workflow that solves a real prospecting problem, then share a short walkthrough.
  2. Show results. "Booked 40 meetings from an automated signal-based campaign" beats any certification.
  3. Start where you are. If you're an SDR, automate your own prospecting first and show your manager the numbers.
  4. Apply early in the cycle. With hiring peaking in January and July, start applying a few weeks before.
  5. Target startups. Founding GTM engineer roles are common at seed and Series A companies that can't afford a big sales team.

FAQ

What does GTM stand for? Go-to-market: the plan and teams a company uses to bring a product to customers.

Do you need to code to be a GTM engineer? Not much. Basic scripting and API knowledge helps, but most of the work happens in no-code and low-code tools.

Is GTM engineer an entry-level job? Usually not. Most people move into it after time in sales, growth or RevOps.

Is the GTM engineer role here to stay? It's too early to say for sure. Some think it will merge back into RevOps once the tooling settles. For now, demand keeps rising.
